September 17, 2019 hearing CANCELLED! Gate calls it off.
Details here. 2020 UPDATES below:
CURRENT UPDATE on our efforts to
stop development at the Outpost.
August 18, 2020, Ponte Vedra Corp. requests and receives an 18-month extension on the pending period for its PUD application to develop the Outpost. Full details, including our letter objecting to the length of the extension are here.
July 28, 2020, Save Guana Now asks the Board of County Commissioners to reinstate Land Acquisition Management Program (LAMP) funding. Letter here.
Two positive responses were received, and we anticipate a third if it comes up for vote after the November 2020 election.
September 17, 2019 hearing before the board of County Commissioners is CANCELLED! Gate calls it off. Details here.
August 15 PZA hearing a major victory, even though we lost the vote 3-2. Details here.
Gate/Ponte Vedra Corp. held an Open House on June 24th.
We had a huge turnout - roughly 200 people showed up in opposition.
Gate showed us their love with no chairs, no air, no actual presentation, no donuts... but we made the best of it, and turned it into an impromptu protest. HUGE THANKS to all who came. If we can do that two more times (plus even more people) - Aug. 15 and Sept. 17 - we can win this!
Hearing dates announced for August 15 and Sept. 17th! Watch this space for further details. More about hearings here.
April 26, 2019: All application documents for Ponte Vedra Corporation's proposed plan to develop the Outpost can be accessed here: http://webapp.sjcfl.us/applications/sbmtlmgmtweb/ERMSList.aspx?ApplType=COMPAMD&ApplNum=2019000003
April 14, 2019 UPDATE:
December 11, 2018 UPDATE:
A major development: The Outpost property had been in litigation since October of 2016, with Ponte Vedra Corporation (PVC) having sued St. Johns County for not complying with its demands. After numerous hearings, motions and rulings, on December 11th, Judge Traynor denied PVC's Motion for Partial Summary Judgement, and in an eight-page order, outlined exactly why.
January 8, 2019, The St. Augustine Record provided extensive coverage on the judge's ruling., reporting that the Outpost cannot be altered from Conservation to Residential by an act of the county administrator. Full story here.
January 10, 2019, Opinion Editor of the St. Augustine Record, Jim Sutton, delivered a scathing critique of Ponte Vedra Corp.'s legal strategy and underscored the environmental value of the Outpost property. See his editorial here.
February 23, 2018 Update: The Guana Research Reserve released their preliminary findings on the water quality of Guana Lake, and "the first six months of the study has revealed some concerning water quality conditions, especially in the middle of Guana Lake" which is just downstream from the Outpost where 66 homes are proposed to be built. They said "One indicator of an imbalance in nutrients is the biomass of microscopic algae (phytoplankton) estimated by the photosynthetic pigment, Chlorophyll a, which was measured at 2 to 6 times the threshold," according to state standards. "High levels of bacteria and nitrogen have also been observed in both the lake and the river." Fertilizer run-off from 66 homes would worsen these numbers, and that's just one example of how construction of 66 homes at the Outpost property would adversely impact the water quality of Guana Lake which has been designated an Outstanding Florida Water and is therefore deemed worthy of greater protection.
